About

Spice, often hailed as the "Queen of Dancehall," is a Jamaican artist renowned for her dynamic contributions to dancehall, reggae, and reggae fusion. Her music is characterized by assertive vocals, provocative lyrics, and a vibrant energy that encapsulates the essence of contemporary Jamaican culture. Tracks like "So Mi Like It" and "Romping Shop" (with Vybz Kartel) exemplify her ability to blend traditional dancehall rhythms with modern sensibilities, creating a sound that resonates both locally and internationally. Spice's artistry not only entertains but also challenges societal norms, addressing themes such as female empowerment and colorism, as seen in her poignant track "Black Hypocrisy."

Born Grace Latoya Hamilton on August 6, 1982, in St. Catherine Parish, Jamaica, Spice was raised in Portmore. Following the loss of her father at age nine, she spent time in Finsbury Park, London, with her grandparents before returning to Jamaica. Her musical journey began in local church choirs and school festivals, showcasing her talent from a young age. After studying at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, she gained prominence with a standout performance at the 2000 Sting festival. Her collaboration with Vybz Kartel on "Romping Shop" in 2009 marked a significant breakthrough. Spice's debut EP, So Mi Like It (2014), and her mixtape Captured (2018) solidified her status in the dancehall scene. In 2021, her album 10, executive produced by Shaggy, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. Beyond music, Spice is an entrepreneur and philanthropist, actively engaging in initiatives that empower women and challenge societal issues.
